Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Open University, initially known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, was set up on 26^th August, 1982 through an Act of the A.P. State Legislature (APOU Act, 1982). Subsequently, the University was renamed as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University on 26^th October, 1991. The establishment of this University, the first of its kind in India, heralded an era of affirmative action. The University offers opportunities of higher education to all sections of society to meet the changing individual and societal needs. The University Grants Commission has admitted this University for assistance under Section 12-B of the U.G.C. (Act, vide U.G.C. Lr. No. F-5-7/82 (CPP), dated 12-05-1986). The Distance Education Council (DEC), granted institutional recognition to the University and recognised all the Programmes that are being offered by the University

The administration branch of the University played a crucial role in all the above activities including getting approvals from the UGC-DEB from time to time. The administrative Branch of the University plays an important role in preparation of Service Rules, Accounts and Administrative Manual, University Act and amendments to the University Act from time to time and performs its functions under the stewardship of Registrar, who is under direct control of the Vice-Chancellor and Executive Council.
